Listed real-estate developer Macrotech Developers, operating under the banner of Lodha, has made substantial progress in becoming a net zero-carbon company before its set time frame of 2035, said Abhishek Lodha, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Macrotech Developers.
Speaking at a sustainability conclave in Mumbai on September 13, Lodha said that the company is committed to becoming a net zero-carbon company by 2035 and have made substantial progress to achieve this ahead of schedule.
In 2022, the company had announced an investment of close to Rs 4,000 crore over the next 5-7 years for becoming net zero-carbon.
In the same year, it had also announced the 'Lodha Net Zero Urban Accelerator' programme, with technical support from Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) at its 4,500-acre flagship integrated township project Palava City, near Thane.
RMI is a US-based independent non-profit organisation founded in 1982 that transforms global energy systems through market-driven solutions to secure a clean, prosperous and zero-carbon future for all.
The programme between Lodha and RMI was initiated to cut down emissions for the built environment, thereby accelerating the sector’s contribution to India’s 2070 net-zero emissions target.
"We believe that the developers of the built environment have to take a proactive leadership role in the world’s response to climate change and embrace a low/ net-zero carbon future. We are committed to becoming a net zero-carbon company by 2035 and have made substantial progress to achieve this ahead of schedule," Lodha said.
Strategic model
"We are keen to share our experience and learnings through this transition with the industry and supply chain and are pleased that our partnership with RMI has resulted in the Lodha Net Zero Urban Accelerator. This accelerator is a major step to drive collaborative, large-scale solutions for a greener future,” he said.
The RMI-Lodha Sustainability Conclave was curated to foster innovation and provide a platform to researchers, developers, designers, and members of the supply chain community to collectively deliberate on the net-zero roadmap for India’s built environment, the statement said.
It presented a strategic model for stakeholders to accelerate towards a sustainable future and champion India’s Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE) ethos.
The key findings that were presented at the conclave included the adoption of strategies that make cities heat resilient, advanced adoption of superefficient air conditioning and fans in India, enhanced usage of greener concrete mixes including recently launched LC3 cement, increased shared mobility and EV charging infrastructure, and promotion of renewable integration across all domains of the built environment, the company statement added.
