Rani Kapur, the mother of late Sona BLW Chairman Sunjay Kapur, said that she's there to remind the world that her family's legacy must not be lost. This comes after Sona BLW Precision Forgings called her claims amid a tussle over family representation on the board 'factually incorrect and misleading'.
Weeks after the sudden demise of Sunjay Kapur, his mother Rani Kapur alleged that she was 'coerced' into signing documents behind locked doors, and that some people were trying to usurp Kapur family's legacy.
Sunjay Kapur passed away at 53 on June 12 after suffering a heart attack in the UK while he was playing polo. In a letter to the board of Sona BLW, Rani Kapur called her son's untimely death as 'highly suspicious'.
"I still don't know what happened to my son. I am old now and need closure before I go," she said in her latest interview with ANI. "I may be old and frail now, but my memory of being with my husband when Sona (Sona Comstar) was set up is strong. I remember the early days of Sona (Sona Comstar), built with care, sacrifice and love. I am here to remind the world that our family legacy must not be lost. It must be passed on as my husband always wanted to be," she said.
Rani Kapoor wrote a letter to the board of the company, seeking postponement of its AGM which took place on July 25. While she didn’t take any names, some news reports suggest that Rani was referring to Sunjay Kapur's wife Priya Sachdev Kapur, who took over as a non-executive director at the company after her husband’s demise.
The firm later clarified that Rani Kapur is neither a shareholder nor an official of the company, and her consent is not legally needed to run the business.
"Mrs. Rani Kapur has had no role, direct or indirect, in Sona Comstar since at least 2019. She is neither a shareholder, director, nor officer of the Company. As such, she has no locus standi on any matter related to the Company. Any insinuation that she was coerced into signing documents or that her consent is required for Company affairs is completely baseless and legally untenable," the statement said.
The company further noted that it is not a family-run business. "The promoter entity holds a stake of 28.02% and exercises no special rights or control. The assertion that the Company is a family-run business is factually incorrect and misleading."
Rani Kapur is widow of late Surinder Kapur, founder of Sona Group, who was instrumental in setting up India's auto component industry after Japanese auto maker Suzuki Motor decided to locally make its small car, Maruti 800, back in 1983.
According to the latest data on Sona BLW's shareholding pattern, Rani Kapur and the RK family trust is a promoter group to the company, and she owns 72 shares in the company.
