Modi renames rooftop solar scheme as 'PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana' with Rs 75,000-cr investment

From substantive subsidies, which will be credited to bank accounts directly, to heavily concessional bank loans, the central government will ensure that there is no cost burden on the people, he said. All stakeholders will be integrated to a National Online Portal, the prime minister added.

Modi said that in order to popularise this scheme at the grassroots, urban local bodies and panchayats shall be incentivised to promote rooftop solar systems in their jurisdictions.

On February 2, Union minister for power and new and renewable energy RK Singh said the Government of India is going to identify one crore households that consume up to 300 units of electricity per month for the scheme. More importantly, such households will not have to pay for solar installations on their rooftops. Singh added that those who availed low-income houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna will be considered in this scheme.

The government has appointed eight central public sector undertakings (CPSUs) to implement the scheme across all states and union territories of the country. These include NTPC, NHPC, EESL, PowerGrid, Grid-India, THDC, SJVN and NEEPCO. These CPSUs will be responsible for installation of rooftop solar in one crore households.
