Sensex, Nifty fall about a percent; mid, smallcaps underperform; 5 factors behind the selloff

There was no respite for the Indian equity market on July 20 as well, with a strong wave of selloff across sectors pulling down the flagship indices the Sensex and the Nifty lower by a percent in intraday trade.

The market opened lower, extending the losses of the previous session, amid weak global cues. The Sensex and the Nifty both fell about a percent, while the mid and smallcaps suffered more.

Eventually, the BSE Sensex closed 355 points, or 0.68 percent, down at 52,198.51, while the Nifty settled at 15,632.10, down 120 points or 0.76 percent.

The BSE midcap and smallcap indices closed 1.28 percent and 1.44 percent lower, respectively.
