With 91 institutions, India is now the fourth most-represented nation in the Times Higher Education’s 2024 edition of World University Rankings. The Indian Institute of Science topped the 201–250 band, followed by Anna University, Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences in the 501–600 band.
Using new methodologies, this year’s ranking analysed more than 134 million citations across 16.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 68,402 scholars globally. Here is a breakdown.
General Engineering
Chennai-based Anna University has earned the highest spot in the General Engineering subject, falling in the 501-600 band. This is followed by Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia.
As per the ranking, general engineering is the branch of science and technology that deals with the design, building, maintenance and use of engines, machines and structures. It includes subcategories like electrical, chemical, mechanical, civil, architectural engineering and computer engineering.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad and IIT Patna hold the fifth, sixth and seventh places in the list.
Business and Management
Anna University and Jamia Millia Islamia again hold the first two spots for Business and Management Studies in the 501-600 band. Mahatma Gandhi University, Shoolini University, and Alagappa University take the third, fourth and fifth places.
Among the other popular institutions, Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU holds the 12th rank, coming in the 601-800 band, followed by Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) at 15, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) at 23.
Accounting & Finance
A degree in accounting often comes as part of a joint honours degree, for example, accounting and finance, or accounting and law, Times said. Jamia grabs the first spot here followed by Shoolini, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Bharathiar University.
Languages, Literature & Linguistics
Times defines the course as incorporating elements of history, sociology, philosophy, critical thinking, visual culture and teaching students to place works in their proper context and providing an understanding of how societies create art and how ideas in great works of writing can create profound changes in society.

It added that the most associated career with an English language degree is teaching, at the primary or secondary level, but it also lends itself to teaching English as a foreign language, provided people have the appropriate foreign language skills. Journalism or writing are also common choices.
Jamia Millia Islamia, Mahatma Gandhi University, Shoolini University, Alagappa University and AMU are the top five institutes offering such courses.
Communications and Media Studies
Apart from Anna and Jamia holding the first two ranks, Shoolini University, Alagappa University and AMU make up the top five spots.
Almost 54,000 students were enrolled in various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes of Journalism and Mass Communication across India in 2020-21, according to the latest data from the Ministry of Education.
