Both industry giants and startups are looking to capitalise on the Government of India's Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronic components, signaling a potential transformation in the country's manufacturing landscape.
As per an ET report, Foxconn is preparing to apply for PLI under the smartphone display module category through its subsidiary company Yuzhan Technology. This comes Foxconn established a display module assembly unit in Tamil Nadu. As per the report, this facility is presently undergoing trial operations.
Industry insiders have revealed that Foxconn is awaiting for PLI and it is keen on applying for it. The Taiwanese manufacturing giant, known as Apple's largest contract manufacturer, sees it as an opportunity to deepen its presence in India, as per the industry sources.
The company had previously shown interest in investing approximately $1 billion in a smartphone display module assembly facility near Chennai. This facility would supply Apple and other clients as well.
Meanwhile, another supplier to Apple - Tata Electronics - is expected to apply in the enclosures category, and it would reportedly also explored other PLI funding categories through its group subsidiaries.
As per the report, another prominent player - Dixon Technologies - has already started investing in display modules with a factory under construction in Noida. Sources said that in the initial stage it would be making 20 lakh display modules in mobiles with the quantity subsequently increasing to 40 lakhs.
As per sources, Dixon is also looking to explore investments options in camera modules, lithium-ion batteries and enclosures.
Zetwerk, a contract manufacturing startup, is also actively evaluating opportunities across various categories of the PLI scheme. Josh Foulger, president of Zetwerk's electronics business, told ET: "We are in the process of evaluating the categories carefully. We are on the lookout for appropriate partners who have the right technology and are scalable to help make the process of entering these new categories more seamless."
Foulger emphasized that the scheme would strengthen India's electronic system design and manufacturing ecosystem while enhancing competitiveness in global value chains.
