Private forecaster Skymet recently said that India may receive normal monsoon in 2018. The Indian Met Department will also today come out with its first official forecast of this year’s monsoon.
Skymet said the monsoon this year could be 100 percent of the long period average (LPA) with a model error of plus and minus 5 percent. A normal monsoon is in the range of 96-104 percent of the LPA. The LPA for June-September rainfall is around 887 millimetres.
The agency also said that there was no possibility of a nationwide drought or deficient rainfall.

About half of India's farm output comes from summer-sown kharif crops, such as rice, sugar, cotton, coarse cereals, which are dependent on South-west monsoon.
The 2017 southwest monsoon season saw below-normal rainfall at 95 percent of the LPA, against the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast of normal rainfall at 98 percent of the LPA with a model error of plus and minus 4 percent.
