It pays to be a worker employed in the manufacturing sector in Jharkhand, with wages being 1.5 times higher than the national average, according to a Moneycontrol analysis of the Annual Survey of Industries 2022-23.
A Jharkhand worker employed in organised manufacturing earned Rs 3.17 lakh per annum in 2022-23, at least a lakh rupees more than the national average of Rs 2.05 lakh per annum.
The income of Jharkhand workers has also increased faster than the national average, registering a 6.8 percent increase per annum between 2018-19 and 2022-23 compared with 5 percent for the country.
The pace of growth was faster for Andhra Pradesh and Kerala among the larger states as their earnings grew 7.7 percent and 7.3 percent, respectively.
During this period, the wage growth of some of the larger and more industrialised states lagged.
Wages for workers employed in organised manufacturing in Maharashtra grew at 4.2 percent, while they expanded by 4.6 percent per annum for Haryana and 4.7 percent for Gujarat.
The minimum wage in Jharkhand has been higher than the minimum wage in Maharashtra.
Better in real wage as well
Further analysis shows that workers in Jharkhand and Bihar were also better off when it comes to real wage. In Jharkhand, for instance, real wage increased 9 percent in four years between 2018-19 and 2022-23, even as workers across the country witnessed a contraction in wages.
The analysis uses Consumer Price Index data to calculate real wage increases.
In the case of India, real wages were 3.5 percent lower in 2022-23.
In four years, Maharashtra's wages contracted 7.9 percent in real terms, while the corresponding contraction for Uttar Pradesh was 8.2 percent.
Tamil Nadu witnessed 2.6 percent contraction during this period.
