Rising heatwave days push last year’s annual mean temperature to a 24-year high

India’s annual mean temperature rose to a 24-year high in 2024 as the nation experienced an alarming 200 heatwave days - highest in 14 years - as per the latest Environmental Statistics report by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The annual mean temperature rose to 25.74° Celsius, up from 25.47° Celsius in the previous year, and were nearly a full degree higher than it was a decade ago.

The annual minimum temperature too rose at the fastest pace on record, crossing 20° Celsius for the first time to touch 20.24° in 2024, compared with 19.77° in 2023 and 19.32° in 2001. The annual maximum temperature rose to 31.25°, up from 31.16° last year and 30.78° in 2001.
