Once regarded as a bright spot in the passenger car segment, compact sedans are losing their sheen as buyers flock to compact sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and premium hatchbacks.

The trend has gone against companies' prediction of a consistent robust rise for compact sedans, thought of as better alternatives to compact hatchbacks. The Maruti Suzuki Dzire has been the bright spot in this ailing sector. The Honda Amaze has also clocked good sales numbers, but for others, the numbers tell a different story.
