With the Goods and Services Tax (GST) now embedded into the system carmakers posted decent gains last month with market leader Maruti Suzuki leading the charge yet again.
Baleno and Brezza topped the growth charts during July even as both models together control a fifth of the total domestic volumes of the Delhi-based company.
Baleno, in fact, is now the second highest-selling model not just for Maruti Suzuki but for the industry as well. The premium hatchback achieved its highest ever monthly sales of 19,153 units last month, clocking a growth of 110 percent. Alto remains the largest selling model which clocked sales of 26009 units in July.
Dealers had to refill their inventory which were running low by end of June as part of their deliberate attempt in offsetting the blow from GST implementation from July 1. Buyers postponed their purchases to July to benefit from the GST-enforced price cut along with discounts dolled out by dealers.
Total domestic volumes for Maruti Suzuki jumped 22 percent last month compared to the same month last year selling 1.53 lakh units as against 1.25 lakh units. Seven of the top ten passenger vehicles in July belonged to Maruti Suzuki while the rest were from Hyundai.
The Creta and Elite i20 for Hyundai improved their performance in July posting growths of 32 and 15 percent, respectively. The two models now control more than half of Hyundai’s total domestic volumes.
For Tata Motors July marked yet another good month as compact hatchback Tiago posted a growth of 23 percent. The Mumbai-based company recorded sales of 14,933 units, a growth of 10 percent over 13,578 units sold in the same month last year.
Mahindra & Mahindra not only held on to its third position but clocked a growth of 15 percent in July. Bolero and Scorpio led the charge growing by 68 and 26 percent, respectively.
Toyota dislodged Honda to become the fourth largest carmaker selling 17,758 units in July, at a growth of 43 percent compared to the same month last year. The company’s runaway success Innova Crysta posted sales of 9,369 units.
Honda Cars India wasn’t far behind clocking sales of 17085 units during July with a growth of 22 percent. Its newly launched premium hatchback WR-V, which rivals Maruti Suzuki Baleno was the highest-selling model for Honda followed by the City sedan.
Premium sports utility vehicle Compass from Fiat-owned US brand Chrysler clocked 935 units sales in July though official deliveries to customers were to begin only in the first week of this month. The sales represent wholesale figures to dealers and not to customers.
The Kwid from French car maker Renault continued to generate dismal numbers with July sales witnessing 25 percent decline at 7,471 units. Renault domestic sales slumped 25 percent to 8,961 units in July. More than 80 percent sales is controlled by Kwid.
