Mahindra Electric and SmartE have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deliver 1,000 electric three wheelers in Delhi-NCR by March 2019 to provide last mile connectivity.
According to the MoU, the two companies will deploy Mahindra Treo and Treo Yaari electric three-wheelers in the National Capital, during the first phase and, later, across the county during the second phase.
The second phase will see deployment of 10,000 e-three wheelers across various metro cities, including in tier-II cities.
"India is witnessing rapid urbanisation and metros are driving the multi-modal mobility needs of the large working population in urban cities. Our Treo range of three-wheelers will address the demand for first and last mile connectivity and transform the way urban India travels," said Mahesh Babu, Chief Executive Officer, Mahindra Electric.
SmartE also plans to deliver 1,00,000 electric three wheelers by 2022 to promote "zero-emission, cost-efficient, and more comfortable" electric mobility.
SmartE had delivered 1,000 electric rickshaws last year in the presence of union minister of road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, at HUDA metro station (Gurugram).
"The e-rickshaw fleet is being operated by Treasure Vase Ventures Private Limited in partnership of Delhi Metro, under the SmartE brand name. It has established strategic partnerships with the Haryana government (HSIIDC) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to launch 1,000 vehicles in Gurugram and Faridabad in 2017," a statement by the ministry said.
SmartE has charging station network to facilitate 800 vehicles and will soon expand to cater 1,000 vehicles in Delhi.
