The auto industry is divided over the April 1 deadline for the rollout of the Bharat Stage-IV emission norms for vehicles. While some automakers like Vinod Dasari, Managing Director at Ashok Leyland, believe that they are well within the law to sell BS-III vehicles manufactured before the deadline even after April. However, others feel that doing so would be a slight to manufacturers who gone the extra mile to prepare for a cleaner emission regime. At a panel discussion on CNBC-TV18, Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director of Bajaj Auto, said the split in the date between introducing a new regime and phasing out old vehicles had never happened before. He said the bigger issue, however, was that the industry as a whole had missed the chance to take a leap and had not made sufficient preparations despite being given adequate time to do so.
Shekhar Viswanathan, Vice Chairman at Toyota Kirloskar, and Sunita Narain, Director General at Centre For Science & Environment (CSE) were also part of the debate.
