NVIDIA, led by Jensen Huang and valued at over $3 trillion due to high demand, is now attracting interest from an unexpected source — the Supreme Court of India.
Huang, currently visiting India, CNBC-TV18 learnt had even expressed interest in a tête-à-tête with the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. Due to competing schedules, however, the meeting could not happen.
Supreme Court’s interest in GPU is driven by its plans to commission its own fully integrated and intelligent data centre to support the court’s IT needs. The court is aiming for a data centre to support enterprise-based mission-critical business applications, software and data. Top officials suggest that the court is in talks with NVIDIA to deploy their famed GPUs in this data centre.
The top court is assessing the viability, cost, availability and management of NVIDIA GPUs.
For context on demand, NVIDIA’s latest GPU offering — Blackwell AI chips — has been preordered and booked entirely for the next year.
Top officials at the Supreme Court explained that the Indian judiciary is the country's largest content creator and will continue to grow, handling millions of cases, judgments, documents, and orders. With the Supreme Court set to start live-streaming proceedings, data generation is expected to increase significantly. There are 17 courts operating daily, and hosting and recording hours of hearings in these courts will lead to a surge in data.
Court officials also noted that such a data centre would be critical for incorporating emerging technologies like AI.
In 2023, the Supreme Court issued a request proposing the design, development, and implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI) solution and tools to transcribe court orders and proceedings.
SC officials also assured that the top court was not behind the curve on the adoption of AI. They shared that AI is already being used to translate thousands of judgments, orders and documents into local languages.
