China today set its GDP growth target at around 6.5 per cent for 2017, down from last year's 6.7 per cent, as the world's second largest economy braced for further slowdown of its growth.

China will "pursue better results in actual economic work," Premier Li Keqiang said in a report to opening ceremony of the annual session of the top legislature, the National People's Congress, setting the 6.5 per cent target. The projected target is in line with both economic principles and realities, the report said, adding that it will help stabilise market expectations and facilitate the country's structural adjustments.
