In reply to an application filed under the RTI Act, 2005, state-owned telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) said that it will cut down its workforce by nearly 7 percent in 2017-18.
An article in the Economic Times says that the workforce lay-offs will have to do with employees reaching their retirement age. "Nearly 10 percent staff goes off the rolls every year as they achieve retirement. We are not filling up new positions and it could eventually help us in increasing operational profit," BSNL Chairman Anupam Shrivastava had earlier told ET.
BSNL's employee base has 209,996 workers in 2016-17 and as on April 30, 2017, it expects the number to come down to 196,162.
