Corporate leaders like Rahul Bajaj of Bajaj Auto and B Muthuraman of Tata Steel have opined that the government has hurried its decision on food security, reports CNBC-TV18.
Rahul Bajaj, chairman, Bajaj Auto said, "All such give-aways are populist measures. Why was it done? The government tried its best to get it approved in the Budget session. To my mind, the ordinance was timed just before the state and Parliament elections and it would be very difficult for the government for the Opposition to exercise its veto." Muthuramam, non-executive director, Tata Steel added, "Food security is important but the government needs to be able to generate enough wealth in the country to be able to afford food security. The generation of wealth will be possible only via economic growth. The government will not be able to sustain the food security programme if the economy continues to grow at the current rate."
