Besides business skills, leadership needs to be steeped into the culture of the company. What better way to achieve this than learning the ropes from home-grown experts. Indian businesses have grown leaps and bounds with people like Harish Mariwala and Kumar Mangalam Birla, who steered their businesses to new heights and opened new avenues for the country.

"Businesses have to be nurtured and you need to be able to take losses for the first three to four years," says Mariwala.

Then there are the GenNext women entrepreneurs starting young; these ladies have taken their parents' legacy forward. The 18-year-old daughter of Kumar Mangalam Birla, Ananyashree, has set up a microfinance company, catering to the needs of rural women.

Others in the pack include Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys' founder NR Narayana Murthy. 'Akshata' uses indigenous crafts as the basis for a fashion label. Roshni Nadar Malhotra now manages her father and HCL Corp's Shiv Nadar foundation. Shruti Shibulal, daughter of SD Shibulal opened two fine dine restaurants and a luxury resort in the middle of a coffee plantation in Coorg. Ambika Hinduja of the well-known Hinduja family runs Serendipity Films. It has produced the acclaimed Being Cyrus and Teen Patti, which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Oscar-winner Ben Kingsley.
