The IT sector is ready to leave the not-so-memorable 2013 behind. CNBC-TV18's Kritika Saxena, who spoke to a host of industry big-wigs at the channel's India Buisness Leader Awards, reports that most firms are banking on emerging technologies and better client budgets to make 2014 a memorable one.

2013 had its set of challenges for the IT sector. But it is over and 2014, according to the IT sector guys, holds out quite a few promises.
CP Gurnani, CEO, Tech Mahindra says: “Market is clearly better for the IT sector, both in the US and Europe. In terms of IT spend, while the growth will not be dramatic, clearly we are seeing a digital IT storm which will benefit companies like Tech Mahindra.”
Krishnakumar Natrajan, CEO, Mindtree says: “Today, many of the global companies are sitting on a lot of cash and want to spend on technology to become more competitive.”
But they are also quick to add that these promises will fructify only if IT players are willing to adapt to change. Yes, clients are becoming a little less tight-fisted about IT budgets in 2014. But they're also getting more choosy about where they want to put this money. And emerging technology like digital, analytics and mobility are the verticals of choice.
Natrajan adds: “Today if you look at the initial wave of disruptions that are happening with social, mobility, analytics & cloud, it will create its own set of demands. So I am pretty optimistic about demand in 2014.”
Some companies have already begun reworking strategies to cash in on this trend.
Anant Gupta, MD & CEO, HCL Tech says: “If you look at the USD 150 billion market, I think the addressable market for us is half. It’s a very well thought out strategy on segments/ countries and therefore we would like to play in that market.”
Experts believe that as more and more companies take similar decisions and increase their focus on these growing opportunities in the digital and emerging technology space, it won't be long before the sector manages to put the gory 2012 and 2013 behind it and move on to newer glory days.
