The government Monday moved the Apex Court against a Delhi High Court ruling that slammed the Centre for arresting a senior official of MakeMyTrip for alleged service tax evasion, reports CNBC-TV18."The judgement says that this kind of extreme action should only be taken with habitual defaulters. This decision was the ultimate validation of the fact that we did not do anything wrong," says Deep Kalra, Chief Executive Officer, MakeMyTrip.
Early in 2016, the service tax department while addressing an investigation had arrested MK Pallai, Vice President Finance at MakeMyTrip and demanded an initial deposit for tax arrears allegedly amounting to over Rs 100 crore.
The Delhi HC had then slammed the service tax department saying firms were made to deposit the money under "coercion and duress" through the "unwarranted" arrest of some of their senior officials
The tax department today represented by Attorney General told the Supreme Court there was no wrongdoing on its part in arresting and the actions taken were within the purview of the laws.Watch video for more...
