Goa mining case: SC asks state if it monitored mines

In the hearings for the Goa mining case, which started on Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the state whether it had ever monitored the iron ore mining.

The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday observed and asked the Goa Government if it ever monitored functioning of the iron ore mines. It also questioned on whether the state was happy with the royalty which was being paid by the companies or miners, reports CNBC-TV18’s Anshu Sharma.

The petitioner Prashant Bhushan, motioned on his behalf, asked the Supreme Court to not allow mining to resume till irregularities were fixed. He also asked the court to set a cap on extraction of iron ore mining in Goa. Also read: Goa mining ban: SC to regularly hear case; miners relieved Meanwhile, the apex court has also asked the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) to explain how environment clearances were granted to all the lease holdings. The good news at least for the miners and Sesa Goa is that the matter will be regularly heard in the SC. However, a final decision will be awaited.
