Bengaluru may get five corporations within existing BBMP limits

However, sources told Moneycontrol that the government is likely to start with five corporations: Bengaluru North, East, West, Central, and South. Each corporation will have a maximum of 150 wards.

"Each corporation will have its own mayor and commissioner, functioning under the GBA. There will be scope for expansion beyond the existing BBMP limits in the future," a source who attended the meeting told Moneycontrol.

Meanwhile, Karnataka deputy CM DK Shivakumar, home minister G Parameshwara, Karnataka Legislature's Joint Review Committee led by Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad, and officials and experts held a meeting at Vidhana Soudha to discuss the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill 2024.

Shivakumar, who also holds the Bengaluru development portfolio said that the final report on the Greater Bengaluru Authority would be placed before the Cabinet after consultations with opposition leaders.

Speaking to reporters after a review meeting at Vidhana Soudha, he said, “The committee has submitted its final report on the formation of corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority.  The corporations will be formed within the existing BBMP boundaries, and expansion can be considered later".

"I have told the committee chairman that Opposition leaders need to be taken into confidence on the report. We need to discuss this in the Cabinet and conduct elections as early as possible.” he adds.
