When shopping for the perfect bedsheet, most people focus on fibre type, quality, and weave, but there’s another factor that deserves equal attention: thread count. Thread count plays a vital role in determining how soft, durable, and luxurious your sheets feel. While it’s not the only factor, understanding its importance can elevate your sleep experience.
Says Navya Khanna, Co-founder and Creative Director of Sadyaska, “Thread count is often misunderstood. It’s not just a number, it reflects how fine and tightly woven the fabric is. A good thread count, balanced with quality fibres and a proper weave, is key to finding sheets that offer both comfort and durability,” she says.
Here’s a tutorial on what thread count truly means and why it matters:
The feel and softness: Thread count refers to the number of horizontal and vertical threads woven into one square inch of fabric. A higher thread count means finer yarns, leading to a smoother and softer fabric. As the yarn gets finer, the sheets feel more luxurious and comfortable. However, the real magic happens when quality yarn is used. “Sheets between 300 to 600 thread counts offer a perfect balance of softness and durability, but always ensure the yarn quality is equally high," says Khanna.

Durability: A higher thread count often results in more durable sheets. The increased density of threads makes the fabric less likely to wear out quickly. However, the durability of bedsheets doesn’t solely rely on thread count but also on the quality of the yarn used. "Opting for sheets made from long-staple cotton fibres, which are spun tightly, ensures they last longer and resist wear and tear better than cheaper alternatives," she adds.
Type of fibre: Thread count alone doesn't guarantee comfort. What's woven into those threads matters just as much. The type of fibre used in your sheets plays a significant role in determining their feel and longevity. “Cotton, bamboo, and microfibre each bring something different to the table, but high-quality cotton like Egyptian or Supima cotton will always outperform lower-grade options, regardless of thread count.”
Quality of fibre: Beyond fibre type, it's quality, too, is crucial. Longer cotton fibres, known as long-staple, are softer and more durable. Sheets made with short-staple fibres tend to have a rougher texture and are more prone to pilling and tearing. "Long-staple cotton creates a noticeably finer fabric that stands the test of time, maintaining its softness and strength wash after wash," says Navya.

Weaving technique: The way the fabric is woven can impact the overall feel and durability of the sheets. Percale weaves offer a crisp, breathable feel, while sateen weaves have a smoother, more luxurious texture. Both can be high-quality, but choosing between them comes down to personal preference. “People often overlook weaving techniques when selecting bedsheets, but it’s essential to consider it, especially if you’re looking for that perfect balance between style and comfort," she suggests.
