In the ever-evolving world of wedding fashion, the confluence of art and tradition continues to inspire awe and admiration. Recently, Nita Ambani and Radhika Merchant, through their exclusive taste and respect for Indian crafts created some memorable fashion moments to inspire future generations of brides.
Two of their most striking ensembles designed by designer duo Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, have highlighted the beauty of handicraft and the exclusivity of hand-painted artwork on textiles.
Nita Ambani’s love for family:
For the reception ceremony of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, the stylish Mrs Nita Ambani wore an extraordinary couture ensmeble by the designers that paid homage to her family, love, and the pinnacle of craftsmanship. Her ensemble, a hand-embroidered Zardozi ghagra, was a magnificent ode to the eternal divinity of temple architecture, particularly inspired by the intricate designs of Kashi.
Accentuated by handmade motifs that reflect the grandeur of temple carvings, she paired this piece the splendid skirt with a jewelled blouse, adorned with meticulously hand-embroidered jhumkas and auspicious elephant motifs, symbolising strength and wisdom. The garment's borders feature delicate hand-embroidered Hindi text, adding a personal touch by inscribing the names of Nita's children and grandchildren on its delicate net base.
The ensemble sparkled with the addition of sequins and stones, and she completed the look with a stunning array of emeralds from her personal collection, designed and set by Viren Bhagat.
The artistic bride:
For her first public appearance as Mrs Radhika Ambani, the bride chose an ensemble that beautifully merged art and fashion, demonstrating that the two are indeed inseparable. The designer duo Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, in collaboration with contemporary Indian artist Jayasri Burman created a unique lehenga that will be remembered for its unforgettable infusion of craft and art.
The twelve hand-painted panels on the lehenga over a special Italian canvas highlighted Jayasri Burman's mythical aesthetic to life. The intricate imagery on the panels celebrates the union of Anant and Radhika through deeply symbolic and meaningful artwork. Human figures representing the couple radiate a celestial aura, honoring the divinity in their love and humanity. Fauna, particularly elephants, pay tribute to Anant’s fondness for animals, symbolizing auspiciousness and beauty.
This masterpiece was further embellished with meticulous hand-embroidery of real gold Zardozi, creating a glittering sea of sequins that enhance the intricate spaces of Jayasri’s art. The lehenga is paired with a blouse entirely hand-embroidered in Resham by master craftsmen, showcasing unparalleled skill and dedication.
Commenting on the collaboration, Jayasri Burman reflected, “Abu Sandeep are artists. The only difference is that their medium is couture while mine is canvas. Both Rhea and Abu Sandeep gave me total creative freedom and understood my essence as an artist. I found my brush dancing all over the canvas. My only hope now is that it inspires a smile on Radhika’s face and maybe someday, we’ll even see it hanging on her wall!”
While the designers shared, “We are honoured to have been a part of this collaboration that features the ideal juxtaposition of hand-embroidery with art. Because art and fashion have always been lovers. One cannot exist without the other. And so it becomes the perfect ode to the perfect couple that is Anant and Radhika.”
