Paws slipping on wet floors, shivering after a brief walk in the drizzle, and the sight of your furry friend scratching incessantly; these are just a few signs that the monsoon season might be taking a toll on your dog. The damp and humid conditions can lead to a host of issues, from skin infections to respiratory problems, making your pet feel uncomfortable and even anxious. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe health problems, which is why they demand your immediate attention.
Keeping your dog safe and comfortable during the rainy season requires extra care and attention. The wet weather can trigger a range of ailments, including fungal infections, ear problems, and even gastrointestinal issues due to contaminated water. Ensuring your dog’s safety means being vigilant about keeping them dry, checking for signs of discomfort, and maintaining a clean and safe environment.
From managing wet fur to guarding against pests, Anjali Kalachand, Pet nutritionist & co-funder of ‘A Petter Life,’ shares tips for navigating the monsoon season with your dog:
Keep them dry: In monsoon, your dog will likely get drenched during their daily walks. After each outing, it’s important to thoroughly dry your dog to prevent skin issues associated with residual dampness. Use a towel to pat them dry, paying special attention to their coat, belly, and paws. A dog-specific hair dryer can also be helpful for thorough drying, especially for breeds with longer fur.
Clean paws: Cleaning their paws is equally important. Wet paws can pick up dirt and bacteria that may lead to infections. A quick rinse with clean water followed by a thorough towel dry is advisable. For added protection, consider investing in rain gear such as a raincoat and dog boots. These items can make the post-walk clean-up easier and can help keep your dog’s paws dry and clean.
Avoid puddles: During the rainy season, puddles are a common sight. While it might be tempting for your dog to splash around in them, it’s best to avoid letting them play in or drink from puddles. These stagnant water sources can harbour harmful bacteria and parasites, which may lead to gastrointestinal issues or more serious conditions like leptospirosis. It is a bacterial infection that can be transmitted through contaminated water and can cause severe illness in dogs. To ensure your dog’s safety, try to keep them on well-trodden paths and avoid areas where puddles are present. If you notice your dog drinking from a puddle, gently redirect them and offer fresh, clean water instead.
Pest prevention: The monsoon season also creates an ideal environment for pests like ticks and fleas, which thrive in the damp, overgrown greenery. Regularly apply flea and tick preventatives recommended by your veterinarian. Additionally, perform routine checks for pests by carefully examining your dog’s fur and skin, especially after walks or outdoor playtime. A thorough check involves parting their fur and inspecting the skin for any signs of parasites. If you find any ticks or fleas, promptly remove them using appropriate methods to prevent further infestation. Keeping your dog’s living area clean and free of fleas and ticks will also contribute to their health and comfort.
Indoor activity: Heavy rains and thunderstorms can disrupt your regular walking routine, potentially leaving your dog with excess energy. It’s important to find alternative ways to keep your dog both mentally and physically stimulated indoors. Engage them in interactive games such as fetch, hide-and-seek, or tug-of-war. Puzzle toys and sniffing games can also help to challenge their minds and tire them out.
If space allows, consider setting up an indoor agility course or obstacle course using household items. This can provide both physical exercise and mental stimulation, ensuring that your dog remains active and entertained despite the weather.
Manage anxiety: For many dogs, the loud noise of thunderstorms can be quite frightening. If your dog is anxious during storms, there are several remedies you can try to help them feel more at ease. Calming solutions such as Bach flower remedies, CBD oil, or treats can provide relief from anxiety. Additionally, playing soothing music or using white noise machines can help drown out the loud sounds of thunder. Creating a safe, comfortable space where your dog can retreat during storms is also beneficial. This could be a cosy corner with their favourite blanket and toys or a designated “safe zone” where they feel secure and sheltered from the noise.
Extend compassion: While you’re taking steps to ensure the safety and well-being of your pets, it’s also important to remember the street dogs who might not have the same level of protection. During the monsoon season, these dogs face additional challenges due to lack of shelter and food. If possible, provide them with food and water, and if you can, offer dry shelter or create a temporary safe space where they can stay dry. Show them compassion and kindness by being mindful of their plight. Small acts of generosity can make a significant difference in their well-being during the harsh monsoon conditions.
