Holi marks the end of winter and the arrival of spring. The festival brings with it the warmth of bonfires, the sight of blooming mango trees, and the sweet fragrance of juhi and mogra flowers. These signs welcome Basant, the much-awaited season of joy, and colours. However, the latter can sometimes come at a cost, as the use of toxic and chemical-based Holi colours may lead to concerns about damaged hair.
Holi is a festival of colours, joy, and celebration, but while your spirits soar, your hair often suffers. The harsh pigments added to the colours used during the festival and excessive washing can leave your hair dry, brittle, and damaged. Amy Johnson, Global Head of Education, Dyson, shares tips on how to prepare your hair before Holi, minimise damage, and restore its health post-celebration.
From protective hairstyles to smart styling tools, here’s everything you need to keep your hair vibrant and healthy this festive season.
- Prep to protect: The best way to prevent Holi colours from damaging your hair is by creating a protective shield in advance. “A generous pre-Holi oil massage with coconut or almond oil helps form a barrier, preventing toxic colours from seeping into your strands. Braiding or tying your hair in a bun or ponytail reduces tangling and colour absorption, making post-Holi cleanup easier,” says Johnson.
She suggests minimising heat styling to maintain moisture and strength, if needed, use tools that style from wet to dry without heat damage. “Additionally, wearing a scarf or cap can offer an extra layer of protection against harsh chemicals and sun exposure,” she adds.
- Post-holi haircare: After Holi, proper hair care is essential to wash off colours and restore moisture. “Begin with a gentle cleanse using lukewarm water and a sulfate-free shampoo to remove pigment residues and chemicals without stripping natural oils. Avoid hot water, as it can make hair drier. Follow up with a deep conditioning treatment to rehydrate and strengthen your strands. Since wet hair is more vulnerable to breakage, opt for tools that dry hair properly, while maintaining scalp protection,” Johnson adds.
Additionally, a restorative hair mask once a week can help reverse any damage caused by the harsh colours, suggests Johnson. "If your hair feels excessively dry, consider a leave-in serum or oil for added nourishment," she adds.
- Protective hairstyles you can try: Styling your hair wisely can also help minimise colour exposure while keeping you looking chic. Johnson suggests 3 easy and protective hairstyles:
High bun with scarf: Use a hairdryer to smoothen your strands and tie your hair into a top knot. Wrap a multi-hued scarf around the base for extra protection and a festive touch.
Fishtail braid: This classic yet stylish braid keeps hair neat while reducing tangles and colour absorption. Simply divide your hair into two sections and cross over small strands to form the fishtail braid. Secure it with a tie, and you’re ready to enjoy Holi
