Just like exercising or eating healthy, maintaining a consistent skincare routine helps your skin adapt, repair, and heal over time. Whether it's cleansing, moisturising, or applying sunscreen, each step plays a role in nurturing and protecting your skin. By sticking to your skincare regimen daily, you allow ingredients to work effectively, preventing damage and promoting long-term health. Consistency helps maintain a balanced complexion, prevent early signs of ageing, and keep your skin feeling refreshed and rejuvenated every day.
When it comes to skincare, consistency is crucial. A dedicated skincare routine helps in maintaining a healthy skin and also plays a significant role in protecting it from premature ageing and damage, says Dr Chandni Jain Gupta, MBBS, MD Dermatologist and Aesthetic Physician, Elantis Healthcare, New Delhi.
Here are 7 healthy habits, suggested by Dr Gupta, that will ensure your skin stays healthy, glowing, and youthful for years to come:

Get enough sleep: "Sleep is your skin’s natural healing time. While you rest, your body repairs and regenerates skin cells, keeping it healthy and rejuvenated,” says Dr Gupta. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of quality sleep every night to allow your skin to recover and regenerate. Lack of sleep can lead to increased dark circles, dullness, and premature ageing.
Sunscreen is important: Do not skip your sunscreen, says Dr Gupta. “Sunscreen should be your skin’s best friend. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 30+ every day, even if you're staying indoors. The sun's UV rays can cause irreversible damage to your skin, leading to wrinkles, sunspots, and even skin cancer,” she says. She advises reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially when outdoors. Don’t forget to use hats, scarves, umbrellas and sunglasses to further shield your skin from harmful rays.
Hydration is the key: For a skin that is healthy, hydration is the key to maintaining the elasticity of your skin. “Drinking plenty of water daily helps your skin stay plump and radiant. In addition to water, using skincare products that contain glycerin and hyaluronic acid can also provide a moisture boost and improve skin texture,” she says. Hydration plays a crucial role in supporting the skin’s natural barrier, keeping it soft, and maintaining its firmness over time.
Follow a cleansing routine: Cleansing is one of the most important steps, but Dr Gupta advises doing it gently. “Use a mild cleanser to wash your face twice daily, once in the morning and once before bed. Over-cleansing or scrubbing aggressively can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness or irritation,” she suggests. Avoid harsh exfoliants and opt for products designed for your skin type to maintain balance.
Don't skip the moisturiser: Moisturising your skin is essential to prevent dryness and maintain hydration. Dr Gupta advises using a moisturiser suited to your skin type. “Look for moisturisers containing ceramides, peptides, and antioxidants to support the skin’s natural barrier and promote regeneration. Regular moisturising ensures that your skin remains smooth and nourished throughout the day, thus preventing signs of ageing,” she says.

Antioxidants play a role: Antioxidants are vital for fighting free radicals that damage skin cells. Dr Gupta recommends adding serums with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and Niacinamide into your skincare routine. “These antioxidants are excellent for brightening your skin, reducing pigmentation, and minimising the appearance of fine lines,” she says. Along with topical products, include antioxidant-rich foods like berries, green tea, and leafy greens in your diet for skin health.
Avoid smoking and excessive drinking: Both smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can harm your skin in the long run. “Smoking increases the breakdown of collagen and impairs blood flow, leading to premature wrinkles and sagging skin,” Dr. Gupta warns, and adds, “Similarly, drinking alcohol dehydrates the skin and causes inflammation, which can lead to redness, puffiness, and a dull complexion.” Avoiding these habits is essential for maintaining healthy, youthful skin.
