A cough that lasts more than three weeks is your body’s alarm bell—don’t dismiss it as just weather or pollution. Timely medical care can prevent serious complications.

A cough that simply lasts for weeks is often dismissed, blamed on the weather, pollution, or an old cold. But doctors now caution that such symptoms may warrant closer attention. While most coughs are benign and resolve on their own, or with home remedies, a persistent one could indicate underlying health conditions ranging from asthma to chronic lung disease.

Some coughs can get worse with time. The danger lies in delay, says Dr Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care and Pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram. “A persistent cough isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s your body’s way of alerting you. Often patients come after weeks of self-medicating,” Dr Grover explains. “By the time they see a specialist, the condition may have progressed”, he adds. Timely intervention not only prevents complications but can improve quality of life. Especially after the pandemic, a cough may no longer be ‘just a cold.’
