Our brains were never built for the onslaught of information that modern life delivers. Social media feeds, emails, text messages and multitasking have spawned a generation with brain circuits primed to be overstimulated — the phenomenon we describe as “popcorn brain.”

Popcorn brain isn’t a formal medical diagnosis, but it draws attention to a common experience: the state of keeping so many thoughts and ideas in one’s head that they feel like kernels on the brink of bursting. Overstimulation of the brain can also produce decreased efficiency, forgetfulness, irritability and increased stress levels. The issue grows worse when digital devices are used in the late hours of the night, interfering with sleep and hampering the brain’s recuperative power.

"Awareness and mindful digital habits are central to reclaiming one’s focus and mental tranquillity", he says.
