Health benefits of garlic powder: What makes it power-packed?
- Contains essential minerals to support bone health: Garlic powder, made by dehydrating and grinding the garlic cloves, contains essential minerals, such as iron and phosphorus, that keep us robust. Dietitian Kate Patton explained to the Cleveland Clinic how iron and phosphorus work together to perform vital body functions, such as building strong bones, supporting muscle function, and protecting nerve health. This is especially important for postmenopausal women who suffer from bone loss.
- Contains selenium that supports thyroid and reproductive health: Selenium, found in garlic powder, supports healthy thyroid and reproductive systems. Additionally, it contains antioxidants that protects our cells and DNA and provides defence against oxidative stress. Research has found a link between garlic consumption and reduced risk of several cancers. “Selenium has been known to decrease cancer risk, as it helps to repair DNA damage that occurs in our bodies,” dietitian Kayla Kopp told the Clinic.
- Contains vitamins which protect the nervous system: Garlic powder contains vitamin B6, which supports brain development and nerve health. Along with Vitamin C, it keeps the immune system healthy, preventing sickness and potential infections. Vitamin C is also good for skin health. While garlic powder may have smaller amounts of vitamins and minerals compared to fresh garlic, it is cheaper, available throughout the year, and has a longer shelf life.
- Contains allicin which promotes cardiovascular health: The powdered spice contains allicin which works as an antioxidant and may help in managing diseases. For allicin to work effectively, it needs to be mixed with an equal amount of water. Reportedly, allicin is good for heart health as it helps reduce blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. It is also responsible for the pungent smell most associated with the spice.
