When it comes to oral health, many people underestimate the impact of their everyday habits. A number of common practices may chip away at dental wellbeing. It is important to understand how these habits, often overlooked, can cause serious damage over time.
Good oral health reflects not just a bright smile, but also functional dentition that lets people enjoy their social and daily lives, says Dr Divya V. Mehta, MDS and paediatric dentist, Apollo Dental Seshadripuram, Bengaluru. “Unfortunately, a handful of poor oral habits can compromise this balance, leaving many unaware of the harm they cause until it’s too late,” she says.
Using teeth as tools
One of the most surprising culprits is using teeth as tools, whether it’s opening bottles, ripping packages, or holding objects. “It’s a recipe for disaster. This behaviour can fracture teeth and damage any dental work you might have,” Dr Mehta warns. Simple items become a dangerous trap for your teeth, causing cracks that are both painful and expensive to fix.

Nail biting
Another widespread but underestimated issue is nail biting. While it might seem harmless, the pressure from this habit can cause teeth to shift out of alignment and even lead to chips or fractures. “It’s surprisingly common, but very damaging,” Dr Mehta adds.
Additionally, stress-induced teeth grinding, or bruxism, also poses a significant risk. Many don’t realise they grind their teeth during sleep, wearing down enamel and leading to cracks. “Managing stress through exercise or yoga helps, and a dentist can provide night guards that protect your teeth while you rest,” Dr Mehta advises.
Diet and Oral Health
What you eat also matters. The sugar-loaded diets and acidic foods popular are the worst of all. “Excess sugar and acid erode enamel, making teeth sensitive and prone to decay. Late-night snacking worsens the damage,” she says, adding, “Limiting sugar, drinking plenty of water, and brushing after sugary meals can prevent a lot of problems.”

Furthermore, your hygiene habits play a role too. Poor hygiene and skipping dental check-ups compound these issues. “Brushing your teeth twice daily with a soft toothbrush, flossing regularly, and visiting the dentist every six months is vital for plaque control and gum health,” she informs.
Smoking and Tobacco Use
Last but definitely not the least, smoking and tobacco use remain a silent destroyer of smiles, staining teeth and raising risks of gum disease and oral cancer. “Quitting is the single best thing for overall and oral health,” Dr Mehta stresses. Even teeth whitening — when overdone — can weaken enamel, so moderation is key. Nutritional gaps can undermine dental strength. Including calcium-rich foods like dairy, leafy greens and nuts supports strong, healthy teeth.
