In most cases, the birth of a child is generally met with great joy and anticipation. However, along with the excitement, it is not uncommon for new parents (especially mothers) to feel anxious and low in mood. Peripartum depression refers to depression that can start anytime during pregnancy or in the weeks following delivery. It can persist for months, even years, if untreated.

Here are some symptoms of peripartum depression that you should look out for, according to Dr Rupika Dhurjati, consultant psychiatrist at Sukoon health.

Persistent sadness: Feeling empty or sad for extended periods every day and experiencing crying spells for a couple of weeks can be a sign of peripartum depression.

Feeling guilty: Extreme guilt, thoughts of not being a good mother, having excessive concerns about the baby's health, and not doing enough for the baby are often more than just baby blues.
