As of 2024, depression and loneliness among senior citizens in India remain significant issues. Recent data indicates that approximately 18 percent of elderly people experience depression, reflecting an increase from previous years. Loneliness affects about 35 percent of seniors, with urban areas showing higher rates compared to rural regions. The rise in depression is linked to factors such as increased social isolation, financial insecurity, and health problems. Nearly 25 percent of seniors report financial difficulties, which exacerbate feelings of helplessness and isolation. Additionally, many elderly people live alone or with limited family support, further contributing to their sense of loneliness. These challenges highlight the urgent need for improved mental health services, enhanced social support systems, and better financial security measures to address the well-being of India’s ageing population. The rise of depression and loneliness among senior citizens in India can be attributed to several factors. Here are some of them, according to Felix Hospital’s neurologist, Dr Manish Nigam:

Limited social circles: Retirement often leads to reduced social networks as former colleagues and friends become less accessible or pass away.
