Scuba diving and stress: How Indians are turning to the ocean for mental health and relaxation

Stress has become second nature to urban India; long commutes, constant messages, and office deadlines seem never-ending. Many are turning to yoga or meditation retreats for respite. But now, an unexpected practice is helping people switch off: scuba diving. Beneath the surface of the sea, far away from notifications and noise, Indians are finding peace. The ocean, it seems, is slowly becoming a new classroom for mindfulness.

A study in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that scuba diving and beach visits both reduce stress and improve mood. Divers on regular medication showed the greatest mental health benefits. Researchers studied 176 divers and 70 beachgoers in Spain. Both groups felt calmer and less anxious after their activity. Interestingly, people taking regular medication for chronic or mental health conditions showed the biggest improvement after diving.

For years, scuba diving was seen as something exotic, a holiday adventure meant for the daring.
