Ever experienced red, itchy eyes, or a burning sensation that refuses to go away? These symptoms might point to conjunctivitis or other inflammatory eye conditions. In Ayurveda, eye health is closely tied to the balance of your body's doshas, particularly the Pitta dosha, which governs heat and metabolism.

When Pitta is out of balance, it can lead to inflammation and discomfort in the eyes, says Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Director of Dr. Basu Eye Hospital. “An imbalance in Pitta dosha often leads to inflammatory conditions like conjunctivitis. To keep your eyes healthy and inflammation-free, Ayurveda offers a range of holistic remedies focusing on diet, lifestyle, and natural treatments,” he adds.

Dr Basu further explains how you can use Ayurvedic principles to prevent inflammatory eye conditions:

Cooling foods: In Ayurveda, diet plays a vital role in balancing the Pitta dosha and soothing inflammation. To achieve this, add cooling foods such as cucumbers and pomegranates into your diet. Cucumbers have a natural cooling effect that helps reduce internal heat and calm irritated eyes. Pomegranates, on the other hand, are packed with antioxidants that combat oxidative stress and aid in balancing Pitta dosha, further supporting eye health.
