If you struggle with setting screen time boundaries with your kids, here are some effective strategies to get your children off the screen and engaged in other fulfilling activities.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) recommends being aware of what your kids are watching and engaging with them actively about their interactions with technology. Make sure what the kids are watching is age-appropriate and look for opportunities to engage in discussions about positive behaviours that they observe.

Help them understand the influence of advertising, and encourage non-screen activities like sports, music, and hobbies. AACAP also suggests to “set a positive example with your own screen use, teach online privacy and safety, and carefully decide when they’re ready for personal devices.”

Use screens in ways that promote creativity and family connections, considering each child’s maturity, as every family’s needs may differ.
