Everyone forgets things now and then. Maybe you miss an appointment, can’t remember where you put your keys, or forget where you left your helmet after a busy morning. Usually, a little hint or taking a flashback may help you remember. This is normal forgetfulness. It doesn’t stop you from handling work, chores, or looking after yourself.
Dementia, on the other hand, is different. You might find yourself repeatedly forgetting important events, losing track of time, confusing familiar faces, or struggling with everyday tasks like cooking a meal or paying bills. Emotional changes, confusion, and poor judgment often creep in too.
According to Dr Aditya Gupta, Director of Neurosurgery, Artemis Hospital, Gurugram, normal forgetfulness is mild and doesn’t interfere with daily life. "Dementia, however, is different. It impacts your routines and needs medical attention. Catchimg it early can make managing life a lot easier,” he says.

Even if you have dementia, or just want to keep your memory sharp, practicing some simple daily habits can make life feel a lot less stressful. “Regular routines reduce confusion, calm anxiety, and give you a sense of control,” Dr Gupta says and adds, “Small steps, like keeping a schedule, setting reminders, and staying socially active, make everyday life smoother .They keep your brain engaged, reduce mistakes, and give both you and your family peace of mind.”
6 easy habits to support your memory:
- Stick to routines: A routine may seem boring, however, it helps to keep your memory robust. Try to wake up, eat, and go to bed around the same time every day. Predictable schedules help mornings and evenings feel less chaotic.
- Keep things organised: Being unorganised can cause irritation and also a lot of trouble mentally. Always put your keys, wallet, medications, and other essentials in the same spot. It saves time and frustration.
- Use memory aids: In order to stay organised and set reminders use calendars, sticky notes, labelled drawers, or phone reminders. These can save you from the frantic “Where did I put it?” moments.
- Challenge your brain: Your mind too needs exercise to perform better. Take up small challenges, solve puzzles, read books, learn something new, or play a quick game to keep your mind active.
- Move a little every day: There is no substitute to physical activity. Make it a part of your everyday life. Go for a walk, do light stretches, or try yoga. Even 10–15 minutes boosts mood, memory, and health.
- Stay connected: Be socially active. Call a friend, talk to your family members, or join a class or a group. Talking to people keeps your mind sharp and your spirits high.
