When you think of mouth cancer, you often start with blaming cigarettes and chewing tobacco. But the fact is, oral cancer isn’t limited to smokers. Studies show that nearly one in four people diagnosed with oral cancer have never smoked or chewed tobacco.

Oral cancer, in India, accounts for about 40% of all cancers in the country, compared to a global average of just 5%,” says Dr Abhinav Narwariya, Consultant, Medical Oncology, Manipal Hospital Dwarka, New Delhi. “Over five people die every hour in India because of oral cancer, and delayed detection is a major reason why.” So, if you’ve never touched a cigarette, don’t assume you’re safe.
