Zubeen Garg passed away on September 18 in a tragic scuba diving accident. The singer has a huge fan base all over India, which was witnessed during his final rites. However, a die-hard fan has honoured Zubeen Garg’s legacy in a special way.
Vishal Kalita has decided to honour the maestro's legacy in a meaningful way by creating an archive of his classic songs. He has been collecting cassettes since 1999, transforming a personal hobby into one of the most impressive private music archives in the city.
His perseverance has enabled him to compile more than 35,000 timeless songs performed by Zubeen Garg in various languages.
According to the Times of India, Vishal shared, “I collected Zubeen da's songs in Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Bodo, and several other languages. It was a time-consuming process, filled with challenges, as finding many of these cassettes was never easy.”
Vishal displayed a few cassette albums from his extensive collection, highlighting rare gems like Zubeen Garg's songs from his debut album ‘Saponor Sur,’ the 1998 Hindi horror film ‘Purani Kabar,’ and the 2002 album ‘Valentine Days,’ in which he co-wrote the vocals with the late Krishnakumar Kunnath (KK).
He also cherishes the lesser-known 1999 album ‘Bhoomi,’ which features singer Salim Merchant and Garg's melodic voice. It's a hidden gem in his repertoire.
He claimed that while a large portion of his collection originated in Assam, he travelled to other states in pursuit of Garg's songs. Since many of Zubeen Garg's creations were created outside of Assam and were difficult to find locally, he visited places like Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, and even some parts of Karnataka.
Zubeen Garg also visited the Melody Audio House during the inauguration.
