Veteran actor Kamal Haasan, one of the most revered stars in South Indian cinema, has had a remarkable career spanning over five decades, with iconic films like Nayakan, Indian, Anbe Sivam, and Sathya to his credit. While his professional journey has been widely celebrated, his personal life, particularly his relationships, has also frequently made headlines. Many may not be aware that Kamal Haasan once had a alleged relationship with actress Srividya.
Over the years, he has experienced multiple significant relationships. He was first married to dancer Vani Ganapathy from 1978 to 1988, and later to actress Sarika Thakur from 1988 to 2004, both marriages ultimately ending in divorce. Following this, he was in a long-term live-in relationship with celebrated actress Gautami for 13 years before they amicably parted ways in 2016.
Despite numerous speculations about Kamal Haasan’s romantic involvements over the years, according to The Indian Express, the only relationship both he and his partner openly acknowledged was his love story with the iconic South Indian actress Srividya.

Kamal and Srividya’s love story began in the early 1970s when both were at the initial stages of their careers, striving to establish themselves in the film industry. Their bond grew stronger over time, and they deeply cherished their relationship. However, despite their love and shared aspirations, their journey did not culminate in the happy ending they had envisioned. Circumstances eventually led them to part ways, leaving both of them heartbroken.
In a past interview with Kairali TV, Srividya candidly opened up about the emotional turmoil she went through following her breakup with Kamal Haasan. She revealed that in the initial stages, she felt completely blank, struggling to process the separation, and eventually, she reached a point where she believed her life had lost its meaning.
She further said, “Our families wanted us to get married. I was like a pet to Kamal’s father. Slowly, Kamal started becoming a big hero.”
Srividya affirmed that she and Kamal Haasan were deeply in love, emphasizing that their relationship was not a secret—both their families and the entire film industry were aware of it. She also noted that Kamal was approximately six months younger than her.

She reiterated that she never wished to go against their families' wishes. She then recalled a moment when her mother approached her and offered advice regarding her relationship with Kamal. "She said, ‘Why don’t you two wait for 4-5 years? You seem to be very sure of yourself. Kamal, you are supposed to become a great artiste. You are going to become one of the greatest heroes in this industry. She too is talented and has the potential to become big. Eventually, you guys might come across even better people. At that time, you shouldn’t regret your current decisions. You both are only 22 now; why rush things? I think it is too young an age to get married.’ She was very correct.”

However, when she expressed this to Kamal, he became upset and asked if that was her final decision. He then walked away without contacting her for a long time. Eventually their break up happened for real and Kamal then tied the knot with Vani Ganapathy.
As this was likely the first serious relationship for both Kamal and Srividya, the depth of their bond and its unfortunate end seemed to leave a lasting impact on them. The fact that neither of them found enduring love again underscores just how profoundly their failed relationship may have affected them.
Tragically, Srividya succumbed to spinal cancer on October 19, 2006, at the age of 53.
