Renowned playback singer and composer Vishal Dadlani stirred controversy with a now-deleted Instagram Story, where he harshly criticised a singer’s performance in front of a large audience.
The post, which has since gone viral on Reddit, has sparked widespread speculation that the comments were directed at Jasleen Royal, who recently performed as the opening act for Coldplay during their Mumbai concerts.
In his Instagram Story, Dadlani expressed disappointment over what he described as a "basic-to-bad" performance, adding that it reflected poorly on India’s music industry.
He wrote, "I'm really sorry, but when you put a basic-to-bad singer in front of a large crowd on a large stage, all you're doing is showing more people that the individual can't really sing, and that sadly, systems within labels in India aren't geared towards really promoting the best we have."
He further criticised the performance, stating, "I've just seen some clips, and my gosh... How embarrassing! For the country, the artiste, the public, as well as 'the scene.'"
While Dadlani did not name anyone explicitly, Reddit users quickly connected the dots, believing the comments were aimed at Jasleen Royal’s Coldplay concert performance. One Reddit user commented, "Seems like he is referring to Jasleen Royal's performance during Coldplay's concert in Mumbai," while others echoed similar sentiments.
Another user added, "It's harsh, but I agree. Clips I've seen of Jasleen are quite embarrassing, to be honest." Some attendees of the concert also weighed in, claiming her performance lacked energy and engagement. One attendee wrote, "She looked absolutely dull and uninterested, and at some point, it felt like she was just reading the lyrics. It was truly an embarrassment."
The Coldplay concerts in Mumbai were star-studded events attended by celebrities like Shreya Ghoshal, Suhana Khan, Navya Naveli Nanda, Vijay Varma, Salim Merchant, Papon and others. The British rock band is set to perform again in Ahmedabad on January 25 and 26.
