Veteran Bengali actress Basanti Chatterjee have starred in 100 films

Veteran Bengali actor Basanti Chatterjee passed away on Tuesday night. She took her last breath at her home in Kolkata. She was 88.

The veteran actress was suffering from cancer for several years. A spokesperson from the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists' Forum informed PTI that Basanti Chatterjee spent the last few months in the hospital before being discharged after doctors advised that she be kept at home under the supervision of nurses at this stage.

Tributes started pouring on social media soon after her family confirmed her death. Actor Bhaswar Chatterjee took to his Instagram and shared that her craft was irreplaceable despite falling health and advanced age. He also said, “She had been experiencing a lot of physical pain lately.”

He shared a video montage last year featuring clips and photos from their serial and wrote in the caption, “My on screen mom Basanti Chatterjee. At 87 battling cancer n other complications on one hand,she is a fighter and a winner. We all love her soooo much.”


For the unversed, Basanti Chatterjee’s career spanned over five decades. She has starred in over 100 films over the years. Her most popular credits include critically acclaimed Thagini, Manjari Opera, and Alo.
