After the creation of two of the best television dramas in recent history (after ‘The Sopranos’), creator Vince Gilligan is venturing into a world away from the “Breaking Bad” universe and is working on a new series.
The upcoming series, which was temporarily dubbed "Wycaro," has been reportedly been altered to “Wycaro 339” according to World of Reel, and will premiere on Apple TV+ rather than AMC. So far, five episodes have been completed, with production slated to wrap up in September.
While this series shares its Albuquerque, New Mexico setting with Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, it diverges significantly in theme. Gilligan revealed to Variety that unlike his previous shows, Wycaro will feature “no crime and no methamphetamine.” “The world changes very abruptly in the first episode, and then it is quite different. And the consequences that that reaps hopefully provide drama for many, many episodes after that,” Gilligan remarked.
And whats more? “Wycaro 339” is going to have “a sci-fi element to it.” “It’s going to be fun and different. I have no prediction as to how folks to react to it — whether they’ll love it or hate it, or somewhere in the vast in-between. But I know it’s a story that interests me,” Gilligan said.
The 57-year-old screenwriter and director, has also hinted that this new project felt like a return to his roots, referencing his work on the science fiction series, “The X-Files.”
As for the cast, Rhea Seehorn who was seen in “Better Call Saul” as the witty legal practitioner, “Kim Wexler,” is poised to be playing an important role in the series.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Seehorn spoke about Gilligan’s Apple TV+ series, “Vince is continuing to play, and he’s just pushing himself to a wild ride on this one in the best way. He’s vacillating between tones and between genres like he and Peter Gould did on Better Call Saul, but it’s even more pronounced now,” said Seehorn. “I bring that up because he’s not as hemmed into how this is different from the mothership of Breaking Bad. It doesn’t need to be able to circle back to a predecessor.”
Seehorn is set to portray "a very different character" from Saul's Kim Wexler. The role, penned specifically for her by Gilligan, has moved her so much that it “is hard to say without crying,” Rhea said. "We will shoot in Albuquerque, with a lot of the same crew… I could see lots of reasons why he would want it to be Albuquerque, but I can tell you that it doesn’t have anything to do with Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul.”
Apart from Rhea, (she is more than enough), Karolina Wydra, known for her roles in “House”, “True Blood”, and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” will join the cast of “Wycaro 339”. According to Deadline, she has secured a leading role alongside Seehorn and will portray "Ana, an optimistic young woman.”
As filming has began recently, it would be safe to say we would probably have to wait until 2025 or 2026 for the series’ premiere.
