Sunjay Kapur, the industrialist and ex-husband of Karisma Kapoor, tragically died on June 12 while playing polo.
He reportedly had a fatal heart attack during a match in England. According to reports going around the internet, Sunjay allegedly swallowed a bee just before he passed out, which may have been an unusual incident that caused the heart attack.
His funeral is scheduled to be held in Delhi. However, recent developments suggest there might be a delay in the final rites due to formalities associated with his American citizenship. A source informed NDTV, “Sunjay Kapur was a US citizen, and since he passed away in London, the legal process of bringing his body to India might get complicated.”
The news of his sudden demise has deeply shocked both the business and social circles he was part of. Known for his enthusiasm for polo and motorsports, Sunjay was the chairman of Sona Comstar Limited, a notable name in India’s auto component manufacturing industry.
According to The Telegraph, those present at the match recall Sunjay saying, “I’ve swallowed something,” just before he fell. Business commentator Suhel Seth also claimed that Sunjay died “of a heart attack, apparently after swallowing a bee during a polo match in England,” as reported by ANI.
Ashok Sachdev, Sunjay’s father-in-law, confirmed the situation, stating, “The postmortem is currently underway. Once the paperwork is complete, the body will be brought to India for the last rites.”
On the personal front, Sunjay Kapur married actress Karisma Kapoor in 2003. The two had known each other since childhood. Karisma’s mother, Babita, reportedly played a major role in encouraging the union, though her father Randhir Kapoor was initially opposed. The couple had two children together—Samaira and Kiaan—before separating and officially divorcing in 2016 after a troubled marriage.
While Karisma chose to remain single post-divorce, Sunjay later tied the knot with model and entrepreneur Priya Sachdev. The couple, who dated for five years before marrying in Delhi, share a son, Azarias Kapur. Priya also has a daughter from a previous marriage.
Sunjay Kapur’s passing marks a significant loss, not only to his family but also to the industries and communities he passionately contributed to.
