Trading the polished façade of Manhattan’s Upper East Side for the haunting serenity of Beechwood Island, Gossip Girl star Emily Alyn Lind takes on a deeply emotional new role as Cadence Sinclair in We Were Liars. The Prime Video adaptation of E. Lockhart’s best-selling novel plunges viewers into a world of whispered secrets, buried grief, and forbidden love. Starring opposite Lind is newcomer Shubham Maheshwari, a University of British Columbia economics graduate making his acting debut as Gat, Cady’s thoughtful and rebellious love interest.

Despite stepping into the spotlight for the first time, Maheshwari delivers a performance filled with quiet intensity and emotional complexity. Speaking about his co-star, Maheshwari was quick to praise Lind’s generosity on set. “It’s such a unique experience, especially being an economics major where I just worked with Excel sheets and all that sort of stuff,” he said with a laugh. “Emily immediately made me feel super comfortable. In hindsight, it was very important for her to do that. I’m really grateful for her making this process so smooth. She was also always the person who was very open to my questions, no matter how ridiculous.”

Maheshwari and Lind’s on-screen chemistry is central to the story. As Gat and Cady reconnect over the years, their relationship becomes an emotional anchor amid the unfolding mystery. “For Gat, Cady is comfort,” Maheshwari explained. “Gat first came on the island in Summer 8, around the time his dad passed away. And, in that moment of isolation, feeling very lonely and sad, Cady was the one who was there for him without even realizing it. That attachment and love for her just keeps getting deeper as we go through the summers.”
