Superstar Rajinikanth has once again proved why he’s called the record maker and record breaker. His latest outing, Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has shattered box office records, becoming the biggest Tamil opener in history and surpassing Thalapathy Vijay’s Leo.

Released this weekend, Coolie capitalized on massive advance bookings overseas and exceptional spot bookings across India. According to early estimates from Sacnilk, the film collected ₹65 crore net in India on day one — the second-highest domestic opening for a Tamil film, narrowly behind Leo (₹66 crore) and ahead of Rajini’s own 2.0 (₹60 crore). The gross domestic total is pegged at around ₹80 crore, with strong occupancy in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi-dubbed versions.

Sun Pictures posted on social media confirming the film’s staggering worldwide total of ₹151 crore on day one — overtaking Leo’s ₹142.5 crore and entering the top 10 highest-opening Indian films ever.

They wrote "Superstar Rajinikanth The Record Maker & Record Breaker, #Coolie becomes the Highest ever Day 1 worldwide gross for a Tamil film with 151 Crores, #Coolie in theatres worldwide."

The star-studded cast, including Nagarjuna, Upendra, and Shruti Haasan, along with Aamir Khan’s cameo, added extra draw for audiences. But Coolie’s true domination came internationally, where it set new all-time records for a Tamil film: $3.04 million in North America, £124K in the UK, and AUS $535K in Australia on opening day.
