Amazon Prime Video India has recently landed in controversy after using a meme from their series The Summer I Turned Pretty to make fun of the size of a random woman's engagement ring on social media.
Due to the intense online criticism, the streaming platform has been forced to remove the post and apologise for the "mean-spirited" tweet.
The streaming platform faced brutal backlash for making fun of a stranger's joyous occasion on the internet.
Following the criticism, Amazon Prime Video India issued an official apology under social media influencer Savannah Monroe's engagement tweet and removed the post.
The apology reads, “Our recent tweet caused hurt and thats not okay. We've removed it and are taking steps to ensure our content reflects our values of inclusivity. We'll do better from here on."
Why happened?
The drama began on October 15, when social media influencer Savannah Monroe posted a picture of her new ring, which featured a green gemstone on a gold band, on X (formerly Twitter) to joyfully announce her engagement. She captioned her post, "He proposed to me an hour after I posted this.”
A separate post about her fiancé owning a former One Direction member, Niall Horan's dog tag, went viral right after the engagement announcement.
When the internet and Amazon Prime Video India made fun of her engagement ring's size, it destroyed all of her excited feelings. A number of internet users made disappointing remarks about Monroe's ring's size.
Prime Video India also chimed in to troll the ring’s size, referring to the simple ring that Jeremiah gave Belly.
In their now-deleted post, the streaming platform wrote, "Girl, is there any chance your fiancé looks like this," and shared a picture of Jeremiah.
However, Monroe reacted to Prime Video India's tweet on October 19 and wrote, “When a huge streaming platform puts out a mean-spirited post about one of the happiest moments of life for engagement, inviting harassment in droves.”
