Nicolas Cage is reportedly nearing a deal to headline the fifth season of HBO’s acclaimed anthology crime drama True Detective, according to Variety. While HBO has not officially commented on the negotiations, sources say Cage could take on the lead role in the upcoming instalment, marking a rare television performance for the Oscar-winning actor.

Plot details for True Detective Season 5 remain tightly guarded, but it has been confirmed that the new season will be set in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City. The franchise, known for its gritty storytelling and haunting atmosphere, has a history of attracting top-tier talent.

Previous seasons have starred Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, and Jodie Foster—several of whom earned Emmy nominations for their performances. Foster most recently won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her portrayal in True Detective: Night Country, which became the most-watched season of the series to date with 12.7 million viewers.

Cage’s potential casting would bring another layer of prestige to the franchise. Though he has enjoyed a prolific film career, this would only be his second lead role in television. In 2024, Cage was announced as the star of a live-action Spider-Man Noir series for MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video, expected to debut in 2026.
