The witchy Owens women (Bullock and Kidman) are set to return 26 years later for a sequel to their beloved 1998 fantasy film ‘Practical Magic.’
The first film starred Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman as Sally Owens and Gillian Owens, respectively. The story revolved around the siblings resorting to practical magic after Sally unintentionally drugs and kills Gillian’s abusive ex boyfriend, forcing them to reanimate his corpse as a supernatural coverup. Based on a 1995 novel of the same name authored by Alice Hoffman was directed by Griffin Dunne and is regarded as a spooky classic with the likes of ‘Hocus Pocus’ and ‘Beetlejuice.’
In an interview with the People Magazine, Kidman confirmed her and Bullock’s return for the film.
“Yes I will be in it. And Sandy will be in it. And that’s that. There’s a lot more to tell, which is why we go, ‘OK, this is kind of interesting now to be able to do this.’ [We] found a way in,” Kidman said.
Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the original film, will return to pen the screenplay. Bullock and Kidman are set to produce.
No plot details of the sequel have been revealed as of yet but Alice Hoffman has penned three books about the witchy family since her 1995 novel — ‘The Rules of Magic’ (2017), ‘Magic Lessons’ (2020) and ‘The Book of Magic’ (2021) — the first two novels are a prequel to ‘Practical Magic’ but the third novel acts as a sequel to it. Reports suggest that the sequel starring Bullock and Kidman will follow the events that occur in ‘The Book of Magic’ (2021).
Hoffman explained that she had no plans of writing a sequel initially, “I got mail from readers saying that they wanted to have a sequel, that they wanted to know what happened to the characters.”
