The much loved franchise ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ has started to make headlines again after emerging from the depths of the ocean like The Flying Dutchman.
It was reported in 2022 that the ‘Barbie’ star Margot Robbie will be taking the reins and replacing Johnny Depp in the adventure film. But then, in an interview, she later stated that she didn’t think that they wanted to make it anymore.
“We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it,” the actress told Vanity Fair.
There have been so many rumours swirling around this ocean folklore franchise. There are reports surrounding ‘Dune: Part 2’ star Austin Butler being cast as the titular lead in the new instalment of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’. The actor hasn’t confirmed nor denied these speculations.
‘The Bear’ star Ayo Adebiri is reportedly also in talks with the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ team but the actress hasn’t confirmed or denied anything yet either.
A longtime producer of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’, Jerry Bruckheimer, recently came to the rescue of confused fans.
The producer spoke to Entertainment Weekly about two ‘Pirates’ projects - a reboot and a separate film starring ‘Suicide Squad’ actress Margot Robbie.
"It's two different movies. We hope to get 'em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one too,” Bruckheimer revealed.
Bruckheimer also shed light on the possibility of the return of Captain Jack Sparrow, a beloved eccentric character brought to life by Johnny Depp.
“If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp... He's a great actor and good friend... I've certainly spoken to him, but we'll see what happens," Bruckheimer told the publication.
During the Depp VS Heard trial, Johnny Depp stated that “nothing on this Earth” would make him ever go back to that franchise again. So, it seems unlikely that Depp will grace our screens as Captain Jack again but we will not lose hope.
Bruckheimer stated that the reboot will follow a completely new storyline with different characters but he would still be up for a Johnny Depp appearance in the new instalment.
Creator Craig Mazin and screenwriter Ted Elliott worked on a screenplay for the reboot last year. According to Deadline, their script was very weird and Disney liked it. But all talks fell through due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Now, Jeff Nathanson is writing the script and Bruckheimer is liking the story so far, at least the third act.
“I think he’s cracked it. He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act,” said the producer.
